While traveling always be aware that you are not in the comfort of your own home. As you will likely find yourself in public spaces and other conditions that may make you a more vulnerable target than you are in your day to day life, please be vigilant and use common sense anytime you travel. Also, please do not “fall off the face of the earth.”; There should be someone who knows how to get a hold of you at all times. Some general information to help you in case of emergency includes:

- Carry the minimum valuables needed for your trip and conceal them appropriately. Passports, cash and credit cards are most secure when locked in a hotel safe.
- Put your name, address, and telephone numbers inside and outside each piece of luggage. Use covered luggage tags. If possible, lock your luggage. Keep your carry-on luggage within sight at all times.
- Don’t bring anything you would hate to lose. Leave home all unnecessary credit cards and similar items.
- Take caution when selecting your transportation within a city. Safety tends to run in reverse correlation to convenience. The safest way to get from the airport to the hotel, and back, is to let the travel coordinator arrange a ride for you through a service. The second is to take a taxi. And ride-share services are both the most convenient and the least safe of the common transportation methods. Don’t use unmarked taxis. Do not accept a ride with any driver who approaches you unsolicited. NEVER accept a ride from anyone who approaches you in the airport.
- Please make sure that someone back home has a copy of your Government Issue ID. An easy way to accomplish this is to have Lee Ann take a photo of it. In the case that you lose it, she can email a copy to you to get an emergency replacement. This is particularly important when traveling internationally and leaving behind a copy of your passport for emergencies.
- If traveling overseas, the travel coordinator will normally register your trip with the state department in case there is an emergency while you are there. It is a good idea to check with her to verify that it was done.
Nobody who approaches you inside the airport is safe; regardless of what company they claim to be with.
